Parts of speech are words that perform different roles in a sentence. Parts of speech include nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions and interjections.
Nouns
Nouns are words that are used to name people, places, animals, ideas and things. Nouns can be classified into two main categories: Common nouns and Proper nouns. Common nouns are generic names such as ball, car, stick, sport, country etc., and proper nouns are more specific like Ravi, India, The Sun, etc.
Examples of nouns used in sentences:
1. She bought shoes today. (thing)
2. Tommy is my dog. (animal)
3. Is this your book? (object)
4. Many people have a fear of darkness. (idea)
5. He is my brother. (person)
6. This is my school. (place)
Pronouns
Pronouns are words that are used in place of a noun in a sentence to avoid repetition of noun. I, he, she, it, they, his, us etc., are some of the pronouns.
Examples of pronouns used in sentences:
1. This is Mahesh. He is my friend. (instead of saying Mahesh again we used the pronoun ‘He’)
2. I am going to school.
3. Where are they going?
4. Me and Manisha are thinking about it. Please, give us a moment to discuss. (instead of saying ‘Me and Manisha’ again we used the pronoun ‘us’)
5. Her sister is sick today.
Verbs
Verbs are words that denote an action. They are also called action words. Some examples of verbs are read, sit, run, pick, talk, come, play, etc.
Examples of verbs used in sentences:
1. He plays cricket every day.
2. My friends visited me last week.
3. Girish runs for an hour after his gym workout.
4. They are talking about the new movie.
Adjectives
Adjectives are words that are used to describe or provide more information about the noun or pronoun used for the noun. Some examples of adjectives include good, ugly, quick, beautiful, kind, nice, sweet etc.
Examples of adjectives used in sentences:
1. Europe is very beautiful.
2. Ramesh helps poor people. He is kind.
3. The weather is pleasant today.
4. My mother cooks delicious meals.
5. He is very lucky.
Adverbs
Adverbs are words that are used to provide more information about verbs, adjectives and other adverbs used in a sentence. Some examples of adverbs are quickly, randomly, slowly, calmly etc.
Examples of adverbs used in sentences:
1. Can you please come quickly?
2. We picked the dress randomly from the cupboard.
3. He walks very slowly.
4. She talked calmly.
Prepositions
Prepositions are words that are used to show the position of objects, people or places in a sentence. Some examples of prepositions are in, out, beside, in front of, below, opposite, etc.
Examples of prepositions used in sentences:
1. The child hid his birthday presents under his bed.
2. Mom asked me to go to the store near my school.
3. They were sitting on the park bench.
4. He went in kitchen to get ice-cream.
Conjunctions
Conjunctions are a part of speech that is used to connect two different parts of a sentence. Some examples of conjunctions are and, or, for, yet, although, because, not only, etc.
Examples of conjunctions used in sentences:
1. Meera and Jasmine had come to my birthday party.
2. Jane did not go to work as she was sick.
3. You cannot score good marks unless you work hard.
4. James is very clever, but he doesn’t study at all.
Interjections
Interjections are words that are used to convey strong emotions or feelings. Some examples of interjections are oh, wow, alas, yippee, etc. It is always followed by an exclamation mark.
Examples of interjections used in sentences:
1. Wow! What a wonderful work of art.
2. Alas! That is really sad.
3. Yippee! We won the match.
