Prepositions are words that are used to denote location and time. There are mainly two types of prepositions – preposition of place & time.
Preposition of place
Prepositions of place are words or phrases used before a noun, pronoun or noun phrase to show the location. For example, at, in, into, on, upon, over, above, under, below, between, among, beside, next to etc.

Into | 1. To show movement from outside to inside of a place | 1. The children ran into the house. 2. Students came into the classroom. |
On | 1. To denote position of any person or object at the top of and in contact with another surface | 1. The ball is on the table. 2. He is carrying suitcase on his head. |
Upon | 1. To show movement to top of any surface | 1. The cat jumped upon the table. 2. The squirrel climbed upon the tree. |
Above | 1. To show position higher as compared something else | 1. She rented a room above a shop. 2. There is a mirror above the sink. |
Over | 1. To show position of something higher at a distance | 1. The helicopter is flying over our heads. 2. There is a bridge over the river. |
Under | 1. To show position of something lower at a distance and directly beneath | 1. We sat under the tree. 2. The cat is under the table. |
Below | 1. To indicate something at a lower level compared to something else | 1. The sun had already sunk below the horizon. 2. The boat dipped below the surface of the water |
Between | 1. To indicate position between two things | 1. There was a dog between a car and a bus. 2. The café is between the bank and D-mart. |
Among | 1. To indicate position surrounded by many things | 1. The ancient temple was hidden among the trees. 2. I found him standing among the crowd. |
Beside / Next to | 1. To indicate position near something or someone | 1. She kept the purse beside the telephone. 2. Dhruv always sits next to Piyush on the school bus. |
Preposition of time
Prepositions of time are words or phrases used before a noun, pronoun or noun phrase to show the time. For example, at, in, on, by, till, until, between, about, since, from, for, before, ago, after, during, beyond etc.

On | 1. To indicate dates 2. To indicate days | 1. Sarah has doctor’s appointment on 22nd June. 2. My party is on Saturday. 3. What are you doing on the weekend? |
By | 1. It means not later than or up to a point in time | 1. Make sure you are home by eleven. 2. By 20th July, exams will be over. |
Till / until | 1. To indicate an activity that continues to a point in time and then stops | 1. The summer holidays will be till / until 31st of May. |
Between | 1. To indicate an activity within a period of time | 1. The restaurant is usually busy between 8 pm and 11 pm. |
About | 1. To indicate approximate time | 1. It is about 10 O’clock. 2. We will be home by about 7 in the evening. |
Since | 1. To indicate only beginning point when end is not being mentioned | 1. She has been waiting for you since 8 O’clock. 2. It has been raining since morning. |
From | 1. To indicate beginning point when end is being mentioned | 1. Most people work from nine to five. 2. School will remain close from May to June. |
For | 1. To Indicate a time period or interval | 1. He has been working in this company for 10 years. 2. I have been here for last one week. |
Before | 1. To indicate a prior time | 1. I have not seen him before. 2. I have done this before. |
Ago | 1. To describe something in past | 1. I met him two months ago. 2. It happened a long time ago. |
After | 1. To indicate a later time | 1. I shall enter after you. |
During | 1. To Indicate a time period or interval | 1. We get the sunlight during the day. 2. He was nervous during his exam. |
Beyond | 1. To indicate a time after something | 1. Don’t remain there beyond midnight. 2. I cannot wait beyond three weeks. |
