4. Pronouns

Pronouns are used in place of nouns to avoid repetition of nouns in a sentence.

First Person

When two people are talking, the person who is talking is referred as first person.

Second Person

When two people are talking, the person who is listening is referred as second person.

Third Person

When two people are talking about someone else, then that person who is being talked about is referred as third person.

Subjective Pronouns

These pronouns act as a subject in a sentence.

Examples of subjective pronouns used in sentences:

1. I play cricket.

2. We play cricket.

3. You play cricket.

4. You both play cricket.

5. He plays cricket.

6. She plays cricket.

7. It plays cricket.

8 They play cricket.

Objective Pronouns

These pronouns are used when something is being done to or given to someone.

Examples of objective pronouns used in sentences:

1. Give the book to me.

2. Give the book to us.

3. Why should I give the book to you?

4. Why should I give the book to you guys?

5. Give the book to him.

6. Give the book to her.

7. Give some medicines to it.

8. Give the book to them.

Possessive Pronouns / Possessive Adjectives

They show possession of something.

Examples of possessive adjectives used in sentences:

1. This is my room.

2. This is our room.

3. This is your room.

4. This is his room.

5. This is her room.

6. This is its toy.

7. This is their room.

Examples of possessive pronouns used in sentences:

1. This room is mine.

2. This room is ours.

3. This room is yours.

4. This room is his.

5. This room is hers.

6. This toy is its.

7. This room is theirs.

There are eight main types of pronouns – personal pronouns, possessive pronouns, demonstrative pronouns, indefinite pronouns, interrogative pronouns, relative pronouns, emphatic pronouns, reflexive pronouns.

Personal Pronouns

These pronouns refer to a specific person or thing in a sentence.

Example: I, we, you, he, she, it, they

Possessive Pronouns

These pronouns show ownership or possession.

Example: mine, ours, yours, his, hers, its, theirs

Demonstrative Pronouns

These pronouns point to something.

Example: this, that, these, those

Indefinite Pronouns

These pronouns refer to persons or things without being specific.

Example: any, anyone, anything, each, everybody, everyone, everything, few, many, nobody, some, several, someone, all, both

Interrogative Pronouns

These pronouns are used to ask questions.

Examples of interrogative pronouns used in sentences:

1. What did you do yesterday?

2. There are two books. Which is yours?

3. Who is at the door?

4. Why are you hiding?

Relative Pronouns

These pronouns relate to or refer to some noun. That’s why they are called relative pronouns and the noun they refer to are called antecedents.

Examples of relative pronouns used in sentences:

1. I met Rupa who had just returned from Thailand.

2. I have found the watch which I had lost.

Emphatic Pronouns

These pronouns emphasize the noun or pronoun that is being talked about in the sentence. Mostly these pronouns are used right after the noun or pronoun being emphasized. For example, myself, yourself, herself, himself, itself, ourselves, yourselves and theirselves

Examples of emphatic pronouns used in sentences:

1. He himself cut the cake and served it to the guests.

2. I myself spoke to the Principal.

3. The boys themselves admitted their mistake.

Reflexive Pronouns

These pronouns are used when action done by the subject reflects upon the subject itself. For example, myself, yourself, herself, himself, itself, ourselves, yourselves and theirselves

Examples of reflexive pronouns used in sentences:

1. I checked myself in the mirror.

2. The dog licked itself.

3. You have hurt yourself.
